Hand Tattoos

The first thing to consider about hand tattoos is that you will never be able to hide them.  These are permanent tattoos that everyone you come into contact with will see.

Hand tattoos are also pretty painful.  There is very little fat between the bone and skin on the hand, so there is very little cushion for the needle to go into while you are getting your tattoo. They are also likely to require touch up sessions in the future due to the wear and tear your hands normally receive.  These tattoos are prone to fading and blurring.  Hands are also difficult to tattoo.  The uneven skin and bones that make up the hand are hard to navigate, and require someone with great skill and experience to do them properly.  You may even have a hard time finding an artist willing to tattoo your hand.  Some tattoo shops have policies that do not allow them to give this type of tattoo.

There are not many options when it comes to placement of your hand tattoo.  You can have it done on the top, the bottom, or on your fingers.  Tattoos applied to the top of the hand are more likely to hold up, than tattoos applied to the palms.  The fingers usually only have space for something very simple such as a letter.  It is common for words to be spelled out on the fingers for example, love.  Wedding band tattoos are also pretty popular.

Common Finger Tattoo Words

  • Love, hate
  • Hold, fast
  • Love, pain
  • Rock, roll
  • True, Love

The Knuckles are also a pretty popular place to have words spelled out.

Tips for Hand Tattoos

  • While your tattoo is healing you should try to avoid submerging your hands in water for extended periods of time.
  • Think about it.  Do not rush into getting a hand tattoo, because they are permanent and very noticeable.
  • You should try to avoid wearing gloves, if at all possible.
  • Be on the lookout for infection.  Hands that have been tattooed are more prone to infections because of the exposure they get on a daily basis.

Hand and finger tattoos are definitely unique, and make a big statement.  Make sure you are ready for everyone you come into contact with to see that statement.  If you are determined to get a hand tattoo, make sure you have a design that you love, because you will have it forever.
