Cross Tattoos

Cross tattoos have been in use for thousands of years although the first use of a cross tattoo is not exactly known.  There are different types of cross designs with different meanings that we will discuss here.  Cross designs show up in many types of art such as pottery, weaving, carving, and painting of many early cultures.  The cross was used in biblical times as a symbol of death by crucifixion and has become a centerpiece of Christian designs as a symbol of the death of Jesus Christ.  The typical Christian cross is a long upright bar crossed at ninety-degree angles by a horizontal bar.  Although most people view those that choose to wear tattoos as disreputable the Christian cross remains a very popular tattoo design.

These tattoos are a distinctive and individual way for people to identify with their Christian beliefs.  There is also a design known as the Latin cross, it is also a common Christian icon that represents the martyrdom of Jesus when he was crucified.  Of all the Christian designs that have been made into tattoo designs, the cross is the most popular by far.

Another type of cross is the high cross or Celtic cross tattoo. It is considered by some to be the most beautiful type of cross.  There will be an intricate border of knots around the inside or outside perimeter of the cross.  The design of the roping will not show a beginning or end.  This design seems to avail itself to tattoo art; it is an elegant and striking design.  The colors may vary depending on the choices of the customer but the classic colors are black and green.  This design has risen in popularity over time due to its’ simple beauty, graceful detail, and the many different meanings that can be attached to the design.  This design originates from Scotland, Ireland, England , and Wales where many of these proud people love to show the pride that they have in their heritage and culture and may be why this type of cross is such a popular tattoo design.

We also have the gothic cross.  This style replicates the German style of powerfully decorated crosses made from iron.  People interested in gothic culture have an interest in medieval and Victorian history.  This type of cross usually represents anger, pain, or depression.  Modern gothic cross tattoo designs use dark and disturbing images.  These types of crosses can be depicted as a blood soaked daggers and are very often wrapped in barbed wire.
